Frequently asked questions and answers

 General...

Does my browser need anything special to view PhotoReady?

No. However, if you want a fuller experience you will need javascript enabled in your browser. A thumbnail slideshow of some the images here uses javascript, as does the ordering process.

If the slideshow towards the top of the column to the left shows a different thumbnail every 3 seconds or so, then you do have javascript enabled.

What does the icon information icon mean?

When you see this, clicking it will open a new window on the relevant info in this faq. Close the new window when you are done.

If you click and nothing seems to happen, its because the FAQ window is already open and probably hidden by other windows on your screen. Find it and bring it to the front and you will see the information you were after.

Are PhotoReady images available elsewhere?

No. All images on PhotoReady.co.uk are only available for purchase here (or within other brands of Crocus Information Ltd). The only possible exceptions to this are those images marked Copyright Gordon Charlton, with whom we have a non-exclusive arrangement.

What image size / resolution / quality do you stock?

Images are held as jpegs, smaller versions of which are viewable in the galleries. Generally they are 2592x1728 pixels (3x2) although some are higher resolution and some smaller. Panoramic and other shots follow their own aspect ratio as determined by a pleasing cropping arrangement.

Why do you have different add to cart buttons for the same item?

Where you live determines which button to click. This is partly for the p&p charge, if it applies, and partly for VAT purposes.
The VAT rules are awkward and more fully described on HM Revenue and Customs web site, here: UK VAT for electronically supplied goods.
Simply put, you have to pay VAT if you live in the UK or in the rest of the EC. If you are outside the EC you don't pay any VAT. If you are registered for VAT in a non-UK EC country, then we do not charge VAT - instead you are obliged to account for it in your own member state.

Can I buy Framed Prints?

Not traditional framed prints... Framing is such a personal and often tactile choice that our customers generally prefer to wait to receive the print before deciding on a frame. The only exception to this, due to exceptional demand, is square canvas stretch-frame prints.

..But we understand why you ask. When you frame our prints they will look stunning on any wall, whether gracing a home or a showhome, a boardroom, a showroom, a reception area, an office or a home.

Who is PhotoReady?

In brief, PhotoReady.co.uk is a trading name of Crocus Information Ltd, Dun & Bradstreet Number 52-000-5836. See the about page for full details

What is your Privacy policy?

We keep all your contact details private. We do not sell, rent or otherwise disclose such information unless required to do so as part of the provision of our service to you. Please see our company's complete privacy statement here.

When using sitesearch, why don't the index pages appear in the results?

There is little point. Nothing helpful to tracking down an image appears on the index pages that doesn't appear in the imagepage.

Can  I leave comments / let you know about typos?

Sure. On every image page (the one that shows the large photo) you'll find a 'click and say' link. When you click it, a small window pops up, specific to that photo, where you can have your say. If anyone else has left any comments, you'll be able to see them as well.
I really like reading what my visitor's have to say - whether it's a pat on the back or constructive criticism, or even just what emotions / feelings the photo stirred in you. So don't be shy, click and say....
I'd be really grateful, too, if you 'click and say' if you see I've misnamed a photo or got any facts wrong in my description.

Buying Prints...

Are my payments secure?

paypal logo - secure online paymentpaypal padlockMost definitely yes. We use PayPal, one of the most respected payment processers around. Whenever you are paying for a purchase or are viewing your cart, look for the locked padlock in your bowser's status bar. This means you are on a secure connection and any details you provide are safe.

How do I buy a print?

  1. First, you have to be on the image page of the print you want. Click the buy me button and you will be taken to the page where you decide on size.
  2. Once you've made your choice and clicked the add-to-cart button (the one for your country), you can then..
  3. Checkout your basket or continue shopping for more prints or postcards - as there's only one delivery charge per order, why not choose something else for that special someone in your life?
Please note that the PayPal pages will display Crocus Information Ltd, the company behind the brand "PhotoReady.co.uk". See the about page for more details.

Can I buy a print at any available size?

No. A2 poster size requires images with 2200 pixels minimum on the long edge and, for A3, 2000 pixels. Most images here exceed these dimensions comfortably.
Images less than 1100 pixels on the longest side are best printed on smaller formats.
(each image page includes the image width and height in pixels). This is not restricted when you order, we assume if you flex this advice, you are doing so on purpose.

How do paper sizes compare with image sizes?

Print sizes quoted on the site refer to the paper size and not the size of the image itself, which may not match the paper dimensions. For example, some images are panoramic, so they won't fill the available height. Whatever size you choose, the image will be enlarged so that the long edge fills the paper

What is the print quality like?

Even at lower resolutions, the printing process used produces exceptional results. The prints use materials that are fade-resistant for up to 150 years.

How will my print be delivered?

All prints are posted using a standard service. UK delivery takes up to 7 working days, rest of Europe up to 10 and the rest of world, up to 20 days. For stretch-frame canvas prints, please allow 2-3 weeks.

How much do you charge for prints?

The full list of available print sizes and ex VAT prices is shown in the table.

Print size Price (ex VAT)
A2 (59.4cm x 42cm) £75
A3 (42cm x 29.7cm) £40

£30
16"x16" (40cm x 40cm) canvas stretch-frame £120

How much do you charge for delivery?

We make one flat-rate delivery charge per order. There is one rate for UK customers, one for the rest of the EC and one for the rest of the world. The only exception is for stretch-frame canvas prints for which delivery is restricted to the UK and Ireland, by courier.

Country / location Delivery (ex VAT)
UK £1.60
Rest of EC (European community) £1.99
Rest of World £3.90
UK / Ireland (stretch-frame canvas prints) £9.40 (courier)

Can I give multiple delivery addresses?

Unfortunately not. As we make only one delivery charge per order, there can only be one delivery address. Note that the delivery country determines whether VAT is due (see below).

What is your returns policy?

Our aim is only to have satisfied or extremely satisfied customers. If you are unhappy in any way with your print, return it in original condition within 28 days of receipt and when we receive it we will provide you with a full refund. (You are responsible for the delivery charges in returning your order to us.)

What about VAT / local taxes?

We are a VAT-registered, UK limited company. All prices are quoted ex-VAT and we charge UK and European customers VAT on all items.

We do not charge VAT if you are a VAT-registered, non-UK, European company but it is up to you to ensure you click the appropriate add-to-cart button for your circumstances.

Customers in non-European countries are responsible for accounting for VAT in their own jurisdictions and will not be charged VAT when purchasing through the PhotoReady web site.

Buying Postcards...

Postcards come in packs of 16 and are A6-sized (149mm by 105mm) with a glossy finish.

How do I buy a postcard pack?

  1. First, you have to be on the image page of the print you want. Click the buy me button you'll see there and you will be taken to the page where you choose to buy postcards.
  2. Once you've clicked the add-to-cart button (the one for your country), you can then..
  3. Checkout your basket or continue shopping for more postcards or prints - as there's only one delivery charge per order, why not choose something else for that special someone in your life?
Please note that the PayPal pages will display Crocus Information Ltd, the company behind the brand "PhotoReady.co.uk". See the about page for more details.

Can I buy postcards for any image?

Technically, yes. However some photos are of the wrong proportion to sit comfortably on a postcard format. For example, some images are panoramic, so they won't fill the available height. Whatever size you choose, the image will be enlarged so that the long edge fills the postcard.

What is the print quality like?

Even at lower resolutions, the printing process used produces exceptional results. The prints use materials that are fade-resistant for up to 150 years.
Although most images here are fine, those with less than 800 pixels on the long edge aren't well suited (each image page includes the image width and height in pixels). This is not restricted when you order, we assume if you flex this advice, you are doing so on purpose.

How will my postcards be delivered?

All prints are posted using a standard service. UK delivery takes up to 7 working days, rest of Europe up to 10 and the rest of world, up to 20 days.

How much do you charge for postcards?

A pack of 16 postcards is £15.99 excluding VAT and delivery.

Buying a license for royalty-free use...

What about Model / Property Releases?

What is a release?

A release documents the agreement between the photographer and the individual or property owner for the image to be used commercially.

Do you hold Model / Property Releases for the images here?

In genera,l no release documents are available for the images on this site because a) it is the phoographer's portfolio and b) the images are intended for editorial puposes.
If you buy a license to use any of the images on this site, it is your responsibility to ensure that one exists or is obtained.

Do I need a Model / Property Release?

I'm sorry but for legal advice, speak to a lawywer. I'm not one and won't be able to tell if you require a release to reproduce an image for the purpose intended.
That said, it is generally accepted wisdom that use of images for editorial or news purposes does not require a release. If individuals or buildings cannot be recognised, then a release won't be needed.

How is Commercial diffferent from Editorial Use?

Editorial use is where an image is used to illustrate the editorial content of an article (magazine, news, website). The difference to commercial use is that with commercial use, the image is used, for example, to endorse, promote or sell a product or service.
I do sell images on this website for commercial purposes but it is your responosibility to ensure that, where required, an appropriate release exists or is obtained.

How much is a license?

There is a single rate of £79 per image for a royalty-free license. Royalty-free basically means you pay once, regardless of use (as long as the use is within the terms of the license, see below).

Are my payments secure?

paypal logo - secure online paymentpaypal padlockMost definitely yes. We use PayPal, one of the most respected payment processers around. Whenever you are paying for a purchase or are viewing your cart, look for the locked padlock in your bowser's status bar. How do I buy a license for royalty-free image use in a publication or web site?

  1. First, you have to be on the image page of the image you want. Click the buy me button and you will be taken to the page where you decide on your usage needs. Note that we rely on your honesty and integrity in this (but we do check!).
  2. Once you've made your choice and clicked the add-to-cart button, you can then..
  3. Checkout your basket or continue shopping for more images. When you're ready, view your basket and proceed to checkout.
There is no delivery charge - once PayPal notifies us of your payment we will email you a jpeg (usually around 1.5MB in its compressed form, about 10% of its uncompressed size).

Please also note that the PayPal pages will display Crocus Information Ltd, the company behind the brand "PhotoReady.co.uk". See the about page for more details about this relationship.

How do I buy a license for a complete Study?

This can be very cost-effective - the bonus price for a complete study is about the same price as four individual image licenses.
To buy, browse to the study that you're interested in and click the add to basket button that corresponds to your situation. When we receive confirmation of order payment from PayPal, we'll email you the images.
We'll email you the entire study in groups of images, so that no individual email exceeds 10MB, and in the first email we'll tell you how many to expect.

What are your royalty-free licensing terms and conditions?

Links / linking...

How do I submit my site for your links page?

If your site is related to photography or visual art, then there are two ways - but neither guarantees inclusion:
  1. Offer to trade links - email me at email address as an image to protect against spam
I'll assess your site, and if it meets the general criteria of morality, quality and I like it (my decision is final) I'll include it. I'll let you know when the link is in place or why I have rejected your offer.
    See linking code, below.
  2. Pay a fee of £10 (ex-VAT) - only if you can't or don't want to trade links.
Again, I'll assess your site as above. If it passes, and most will, I'll include the link and email you. If it doesn't pass, I'll email you with the reason for rejection.
